page four - Sailing the Great Lakes -July 2008 ....or Where in the World is John now?- Page five
July 24 Our Passangers , John Urban and his sister Mary Jo, arrived and then by 10Am Anders was turning the ship around to take her back to the canal. I always like watching him turn it around. Must be fun to be up on the bow as she swings around. The guys were up front giving spots and I'm always amazed at the HUGE pile of cargo that the ship deposits on the dock!
Anders called the bridge operator to let him know we were on our way and he assured us the bridge would indeed be opened when we got there. Then we took a short trip across Lake Ontario. Soon we were approaching Port Weller Piers and another long day in the Welland Canal, with two passangers aboard and two more boarding in Lock One! There was no time to go down for breakfast for Anders so I went down the 5 flights of stairs to bring us up some leftover breakfast sandwiches, muffins and fruit for breakfast. Then before we got to the canal we had a nice fish lunch.
We were in Lock One at 12:45PM. It was interesting to watch two guys who were taking turns running up and down the 3 flights of stairs there from water level to the top of the wall. CRAZY!
On our way to the canal they discovered that one of the cables had broken so they sent one of the deck workers up to splice it together and fix it, he had it done just in time to hand a line to the lock guys and pull it up to hold the ship! Good work!
Lots of photo ops for our passangers and lots of stories being told! John, Mary Jo, Jim and his son were busy clicking and I was too! We looked like paparrzzi I'm sure! ha ha!
We had to hang out and wait for the CSL ASSINIBOINE and at one point it gave me one of those...is he going to move? moments...ha! Of Course Anders wasn't worried... :o)
This is amazing...this canal..look at how this HUGE ship is just sitting there in all that water...the pressure must be incrediable...its truly a remarkable site! |
